What are we?
For 10 months, we were a holding pattern. An ambitious
flight plan written by some conspiratorial creative types
holed up in a rusty old hangar.
Now, we're a quarterly online and print journal of fiction, poetry, essays, and art. The miscellany of storytellers far and wide.
Next summer, we'll roll into our first strafing run on the hardened bunkers of conventional narrative and form with the launch of our small press and our first book publications.
And skywriting. Oh, there's gonna be skywriting ....
what are we looking for?
We hold to a simple truth: Story matters. We look for work that's challenging without sacrificing plot, character or action. Stories that blur the line between genre and literature (a line we intend to carpet-bomb, in any event).
We're less interested in the melodramatic or experimental. If it fits the New Yorker, chances are it's not right for Six Three Whiskey. Our writers, poets and artists tend to hang out in saloons, not literary salons. Hell, odds are a couple of 'em live in saloons.
If we've piqued your interest, get flight plan updates by liking us on Facebook, sending us your work or joining us!
Limited Edition copies of Volume I, Issue 1 of Six Three Whiskey are SOLD OUT. We're offering a limited-time bonus on pre-orders for our main run - click here!
January 1, 2014 - Happy New Year! The hardy crew of Six Three Whiskey wish you and yours a happy and safe holiday, and here's to the very best in 2014. We'd also like to say a heart-felt TALLY HO and THANK YOU to all of our contributors. You've made Six Three Whiskey not only possible, but the outstanding publication it has become.
We'd also like to thank our readers, Facebook fans, and friends in California and around the world. We truly would not be able to do this without all of you. Thank you all, and happy 2014!!!
December 25 - Merry Christmas!!!
December 20 - Thanks to our fantastic, masterful brand manager and web genius, Crystal Raymond (www.crystalraymond.com) we're launching a BRAND NEW WEBSITE! Look for it early in the new year!
December 7 - For our generation, the world changed on September 11, 2001. For our parents, it was November 23, 1963. For our grandparents, it was 73 years ago today, on a quiet Sunday morning in Pearl Harbor. We take a moment to reflect, and to express our gratitude to the men and women who, over the decades and centuries, have sacrificed so much so that the rest of us may enjoy the freedoms we have today. We may not always agree (these days, agreement seems more rare than ever) but today we can take a moment and say thank you.
November 30 - Congratulations to Lou Mathews, Alison Turner, and Robert Roman, for being nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize!
November 30 - We're excited to announce the addition of two new crew members! Rob Roman is a short story writer from L.A. who comes to us with a background in education and content creation. Steven John is a writer and humorist originally from Washington, DC, with one novel under his belt and another on the way in 2014. See their bios on our Flight Crew and Contact Page. Welcome aboard, Rob and Steve!
November 15 - Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! We're showing our gratitude for an incredible six months by putting together our Pushcart Prize nominees! Stay tuned for updates, and have a great holiday.
September 13 (Updated October 3) - Without a cent of advertising (okay, okay, except for $15 poorly deployed on a Facebook campaign) we have close to 250 pre-orders for Six Three Whiskey, Volume I, Issue 1! Keep spreading the word and thank you for your enthusiasm and support!
beautiful devices: Stories, poems, art
August 13, 2013 - THANK YOU!!! Six Three Whiskey's "pre-launch" party at 826LA was a huge success! We lost count around 75 people, and that didn't include the readers and staff. We'd also like to thank Beckman Vineyards and Ranchita Canyon in Santa Ynez, for providing a terrific wine flight. And of course thanks again to 826LA, and Executive Director Joel Arquillos. Pics of the event here!
Usually we commit the Beautiful Devices space to short films of an artistic bent (often involving airplanes).
This time, though, we're giving a sneak preview of some of the the extraordinary artwork you'll find in Issue 1! Today we feature work by L.A. artists Fernando Barragan and Jorge Bernal. They're part of a new generation of Chicano artists in the City of Angels.
Their work is at once firmly rooted in tradition and wildly inventive. They draw you in with stories and then keep you with extraordinary execution in detail, color and texture. Six Three Whiskey is excited (and very lucky) to be working with these artists!
Check out the Archived Beautiful Devices.
